Stress, Coping Behaviors, and Observational Skills Copy

Fearful Sheltie helped by TTouchWhen working with fearful, anxious, or reactive behaviors in dogs it is important to understand the physiology of stress and how dogs attempt to cope with the challenges of living in our sometimes chaotic human world!  In this lesson we will review the function of the two divisions of the  Autonomic Nervous System:  The sympathetic branch and the parasympathetic branch, and how stress impacts physiology.  We will also identify how dogs react to stress with various behavioral coping strategies to try to regulate themselves or create a sense of safety.  The last portion of the lesson will focus on observing how dogs communicate their level of comfort or discomfort as well as other physical characteristics.  Several video clips will be included in the lesson to illustrate particular behaviors and help you develop your observation skills.
