The term obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is one you may hear of in humans fairly frequently. People affected by this mental health condition experience frequent obsessive thoughts causing feelings of anxiety, disgust, and unease, and they act out certain behaviours over and over again. If left untreated, the condition can take over the sufferer’s life.

With Canine Compulsive Disorder or CCD for short, you will see dogs repeating an action or behaviour out of context, such as:

– Chasing reflections or shadows. – Tail chasing. – Spinning, or pacing. – Barking. – Sucking or licking – themselves or objects. – Object obsession. – Pica – eating objects other than food. – Polydipsia – excessive drinking. – Polyphagia – excessive eating. – Fly snapping – snapping at things that aren’t there. – Hallucinations.

Many of the management tools and all of the training and Tellington TTouch Training tools described in this course can be applied to any of these behaviours. The more proactive you are the greater the benefit to you and your dog.

As with people, CCD is a complex issue that cannot necessarily be helped with a “one size fits all approach” or simply additional training or exercise.
